maintaining a fixed relationship between moneys of
the gold standard and of silver-using countries. The
U.S. President has accordingly appointed a Connis-
sion to visit Zurope and confer with the officials
of the different Governments. Mr. Choate in his
Note of the 50th ult. says that some suggestions
may be submitted by the visiting Commission with
the object of creating a permanent and uniform
monetary system in China and arranging the inden-
nity payments on a basis which will permit China
to strengthen her credit and prepare for the intro-
duction of such a monetary system.
